Poster: Ten Points to Consider Before You Sign a Military Enlistment Agreement.  The Pentagon spends $2 billion/year recruiting vulnerable youth to join the military. Movies and Documentaries: Charleston and Wheeling Peace groups and probably Clarksburg in the fall have an ongoing film series.  This is an easy way to raise awareness and encourage people to show films to their neighbors, clubs, and churches.  For a list of films click here.

Books:

Waging Peace: The Art of War for the Anti-War Movement - Scott Ritter on Book TV: "Opposing this war is the easiest thing in the world to do, because it's the right thing to do. And yet, the anti-war movement can't get it's act together. That's why I wrote this book. The anti-war movement thinks that a strategy is holding a demonstration on a street corner, holding hands, lighting candles and singing Kumbia... No, that's not a strategy. That may qualify as a tactic. But a tactic divorced from strategy is just the 'noise before defeat.' ...That's why when I say, 'Waging Peace: The Art of War for the anti-war movement,' I use that terminology. I know there are some people in the anti-war movement that are against it. They say, 'There's no way we can support something like that.' Well then you will continue to get your butts kicked." (The author will be in Charleston October 25)

On Strategic Nonviolent Conflict: Thinking About the Fundamentals by Robert Helvey.  Robert Helvey is a retired military officer who lives in South Charleston.  He has trained nonviolent activists all over the world. This book is free to download, plus many other books and films on nonviolence at the same web site.

Churches:

West Virginia Council of Churches (WVCC) Policy on the Iraq War: WVCC “has great concern for the men and women our country has sent to Iraq. These are not only soldiers but our sons and daughters, co-workers, neighbors and fellow participants in our houses of worship. Their families remain with us as the soldiers depart in service to our country.

As vulnerability of our soldiers has escalated, resulting in more than 3000 American deaths and countless thousands of Iraqis dead, we call upon the U.S. Congress and president to establish a withdrawal plan for our troops.

We believe that the gospel teaching, "Blessed are the peacemakers," calls us to take this action.” Rev. Ricardo Flippin revflip@wvcc.org of the WVCC is working to help WV vets returning from Iraq.
